How to Password Protect a Windows XP Computer
The default behavior of a Windows XP computer is to automatically log a user into the operating system using an account that has full permission to install, modify and delete files. Unless the end user sets a password on this account, the default password is a blank password. This document details how one goes about password protecting a windows computer to prevent this from happening.
Note: These instructions apply when the computer is either running Windows XP Home Edition as the operating system or it is running the Windows XP professional operating system but is not joined to a domain.
1. Click on the Start button and a menu will appear
2. Select Control Panel on the right hand side of that menu.

3. Double click on User Accounts link. The following screen will appear.

4. Under the Heading "Pick a task" click on the Change an account link.

On the next screen there will appear all of the accounts that are on the computer. There will always be an Administrator and a Guest account but there may be other accounts as well that have the same permissions as the Administrator account.
5. Double click on the Administrator account

6. On the next screen, click on the Create a password link located under the "What do you want to change about your account?" heading.

7. In the Type a new password box, type a password.
8. In the Type the new password again to confirm box, type the new password again. If you want a reminder in case you forget your password, type a hint for yourself in the Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint box
9. Click on the Create Password button.
The next time you restart your computer you will have to enter this password in order for the operating system to boot up properly. Make sure that the password is one your can remember or write it down and keep it in a secure location.
